KMWA Delhi with a slize of three and a half decades history in the Socio-Cultural life of Delhi as on 15th April 2023

Delhi has a very long history of many centuries.  It has been an important political Centre of India as the capital of several powerful empires.  Similarly, Delhi has communities from different regions of the country, who brought their own culture, fairs and festivals into the Delhi’s life.

People beyond Vindhyas started coming to Delhi in search of jobs and their livelihood long before India became independent and as such their footprints can be traced very much in the pre-independence era also.  Some of the milestones in the community and cultural arena of Delhi are 84 years old Kerala Club born in the house of Shri KPS Menon, later India’s first Foreign Secretary and started way back in the year 1939, Delhi Malayalee Association (DMA) established in the year 1949 as a premier socio cultural organization, many other organizations and also the Kerala Muslim Welfare Association (KMWA), Delhi established on 15th April 1988.  It is really heartening that both these DMA and KMWA were established on the Vishu Day, but 45 years apart, as DMA has completed and celebrating 75 years of existence while KMWA completed 35 years on 14th April 2023.

The KMWA Delhi, on completion of the three and a half decades of existence in the history of Delhi definitely remembers all those who walked for conceptualizing and setting up of this organization, walked with to bring it to this day’s glorious status and those who walked along to fulfil the long time dream of its own Centre in Delhi and finally who walk ahead to lead and manage the affairs of the organization in the most appropriate way.

Let us all remember and pray for our first President of the organization Mr. ABOO BAKER, who left for his heavenly abode on 27th January 2021, but his hard works in bringing the congregation to a structured association by getting it registered under Societies Registration Act 1860 during the year 1990 in Delhi and will always remain as a reason for him to get the continuous virtues from Almighty God in his hereafter death also.

Sad demise of Janab Aboo Baker Sahib, the First President of KMWA, Delhi on 27th January 2021

Assalamu alaikum, Inna lillahi vainna ilaihi rajioon.  The very purpose for which the Kerala Muslim Welfare Association, Delhi was set up with its first President Mr. Aboo Baker Sir, felt to be not fully achieved on hearing today the extremely disturbing news of his departing from this world on 27th January 2021, yes I mean 2021, during the peak Covid-19 Pandemic in Delhi.  Aboo Baker Sir was 86 years old at the time of his death.

As usual, this time also during our Annual Social Get-together for Communal Harmony and Iftar Program, I attempted to contact and inform him, but the phone was not answered.  Again today, 06th April 2023, I called and the call was answered by his wife, who informed me about the tragic event, which to me is like a real personal loss altogether.  Though many of our near and dears bid farewell by becoming the victims to the Covid situation in Delhi, in this highly advanced communication era, we were able to hear about all of them to condole, pray for them and to stand with the bereaved families, but this is felt to be the most unfortunate chapter of our Association’s history of 35 years completing on next week, exactly on 14th April as the first meeting of the Association was held on a Friday afternoon of 15th April 1988 in Lodhi Gardens.  The restricted movements and even the protocol of allowing only 5 people to attend the last rites for the deceased etc., may be taken as some solace from our guilty feeling.

However, now our Association is vibrant with the able management and leadership supported by thousands of well-wishers including members and Students community, added strength of KMWA Centre at Mayur Vihar, let us hope to learn more from all our experiences to go further to work for the well-being of all especially the Keralites in Delhi, God willing.

Mr. Aboo Baker’s family comprises his two daughters, one son, all are in US and Russia, and his wife, who is currently in Dwarka Delhi since last one month or so, else stays with the children or in Kerala.
